About the Event
Starting June 1st, Adoption Support Alliance will host an online book study of the best seller: The Body Keeps the Score. This book study, created by the podcast team of Trauma-Informed Everything by Allison Sweatman, LSCW, and Andie Coston, MSW intern, was designed for persons and families who have experienced, or whose loved ones,  have experienced trauma. This specific course is offered to Adoptive Parents and Professionals who care for or work with foster children, adoptees, or others who have experienced trauma. Discussions will focus on applying the book’s heavy content to practical, real-life understanding and application with a focus on adoption.
For those unfamiliar with The Body Keeps the Score, the author Dr. Bessel Van der Kolk, is one of the leading researchers on Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome and trauma. Throughout the text, he offers insight into current clinical research on trauma, a detailed study of the brain, the effects of trauma on it, and different methodologies and treatments to address and heal the brain after experiencing trauma.
The five-week book study will walk you through each of the five parts of the book using Trauma-Informed Everything’s The Body Keeps the Score Workbook. In the workbook, you will find each chapter broken down into several sections: Td:lr (Too long; didn’t read), Memorable Quotes, reflection questions, and Making Connections which offers more opportunities for learning about the topics presented in each chapter. Each week we will meet for an hour to digest, discuss, and share stories and questions about each part of the book. Do not be afraid! This book is heavy and contains an exorbitant amount of information. This book study will help you walk away with a basic understanding of the book, its content, and how to implement it into your own lives as adoptive parents and/or your professional work.
Participants will be responsible for purchasing their own books. Â Upon registration, a digital file of the workbook will be e-mailed to you one week prior to the first meeting on May 24th. Participants do not need to be able to attend all meetings to register, but attendance is strongly encouraged to help you absorb the material as well as gain more from discussions.
We will need a minimum of five families to register in order to facilitate this book study. Â If we have to cancel due to lack of interest, your payment will be refunded in its entirety. Â You will be notified by May 20th if the group is canceled.
