About the Event
Are you unsure what phrases to use to share your child's adoption story with them? Do you feel uncomfortable when your child starts to ask questions? Do you have an open adoption that, at times, complicates the conversations you are having?
PART ONE: Join Erin Nasmyth, LCSW and adoption-competent therapist, as she answers the question "Why do I need to talk to my kid about adoption?" and "How do I start?"Â
PART TWO: Part two of this course will be led by the amazing team at POST Resource. POST Â is an adoptee-owned post placement services company created to bring connection to the entire adoption constellation through tools, resources, and education via their Connection Boxes and Subscription Services. Co-founders Claire Hudson and Andie Coston are both friends of ASA - Claire has spoken at our Adoptee panels and Andie is a LCSW who interned with us while she lived in Charlotte.
In this workshop, POST will guide participants through a hands on activity from one of their connection kits. We will discuss the various ways in which our preconceived ideas guide and influence our understanding of adoption. In this workshop, parents and caregivers will learn various ways to facilitate discussions within their home to help promote positive self identity and assist the child in their care with processing their individual story.Â
This group is designed to be both educational and supportive. Our intent is that you'll leave with greater confidence in having conversations with your child, tools to use in the conversations and a feeling that you are not alone! Â The conversations will not end in these 2 weeks; however, you will be equipped with additional resources and a community to build upon in the days and years to come.
The sessions will take place via Zoom on Thursday, November 2nd and Thursday, November 9th 7:30-9 PM. Â Please plan to attend both sessions!Â
ASA is able to offer this course for FREE thanks to the generous support of Foundation For The Carolinas.Â
